Leisure in Contemporary Society
Discussion One: Meanings of Leisure
Although most of ancient Roman life revolved around business and leisure, they also set
time aside to enjoy otium (leisure). Leisure in ancient Rome was carried out for entertainment
and fun. In the city, slaves or laborers were used to provide the entertainment and pleasure for
the middle class and politicians. This form of entertainment was also meant to be a form of social

allows one to use energy they have garnered throughout the week and let it flow. This allows the
participant to channel their remaining energy on something productive not associated with
negative energy such as stress experienced before. It also falls under compensation whereby
needs not satisfied at work are met here. One cannot relieve their stress in a work environment
