The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki marked the end of World War II with an ultimate
win for the United States. The unleashing of the two bombs revealed the United States superiority
in military weapons across the world. The U.S became the world superpower and had to adopt the
role of maintaining peace between different nations. After the end of World War II, different
countries engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction, which led to the emergence
of cold war. As the world superpower, the United States assumed the mandate of ensuring that
nations engaging in nuclear weapons development do not create a threat to international peace.
