Description

I want to point out some details that our group decided to do of this assignment. We were decided to be volunteers in a place which name is 'souls harbour rescue mission' in the City Halifax, NS. The website can be found from https://www.shrm.ca/. During the weekdays, this place will serve food to homeless people. The content of volunteer is just being a waiter to serve meals and clean tables something like that. I was volunteering there on Tuesday Feb. 26th of this year. This assignment need 3-4 pages with double space, please take care do not write too many words. Please read carefully the "Key Elements" mentioned in the PDF file.

Management 1302 Assignment #2 Advocacy Project Engagement with the Community The purpose of this exercise is to provide participants with personal context for engaging with your community. The goal of this assignment is to learn from the experience; while success is desirable, you will be evaluated based on the evidence of learning you provide. The Task This assignment will be launched in class on January 30th. In your assigned groups, you will select, design, and execute an advocacy project in your community. The goal is to identify a desirable change in your context or community and develop and implement an intervention that seeks to effect that change. We are asking you to get engaged in an activity that will make a difference to those around you. Simply giving money is not an option. You must engage in a way that is hands on and contributes something of value. While success is desirable, the key points for evaluation of the project are based on the critical / reflective components of the exercise. (Note that a bad plan that produces poor results does not provide much fodder for critical reflection.) Your individual submission should be 3-4 pages double spaced, 12-point font and include a cover page and references using APA format (which do not count towards the page limit). Include a minimum of two credible sources beyond those listed on the course Brightspace. A well-developed paper will have an introduction, body with subheadings, and conclusion. Key Elements to be Included Are: A clearly identified problem to be addressed (e.g., excessive use of single-use plastics). This should set out the nature of the problem (i.e., why it is a problem, and a general course of action to address, help raise awareness or mitigate the problem with the community). A clearly defined goal/solution to the problem, based in a defined context / limit for action (e.g., reduce the use of single-use plastics on the Sexton campus by 10% within a certain time frame). A strategy for intervention, including a timeline, that indicates both what you proposed to do, and why you expect it to address the identified problem. A description of, and critical reflection on, your effort to implement the proposed strategy. The reflection should consider WHAT you were trying to do, WHY your efforts succeeded or failed, and HOW you would either a) do it differently “next time” (if you did not meet your goal), or b) expand on your effort (if you were successful). Finally, please briefly report (1-2 paragraphs) on the experience of working in a team, and how that experience relates to course content. Submission Note - individual reports are to be submitted by each group member. It is expected that the learning will be specific to the individual and hence photocopies of the same report signed by all group members are unacceptable. Assessment Criteria: Assessment is based on the strength of what the student has learned, not how much success he/she has experienced. There is as much to be learned from a failure, as there is a success (i.e., Lessons Learned). For example, it is more important to know the questions small business must respond to, rather than knowing the answers. Grading Rubrics: Criteria Identify current problem in the community You can do better! Fails to identify problem. Competent Identifies problem but fails to incorporate sound reasoning on why it is a problem. (1.5) Clearly define goal on solving the problem Fails to identify goal on how to solve the problem. Introduction

When we got the chance to do an advocacy project within the community, the first
organization that we thought of was the “souls harbor rescue mission” in City Halifax, NS. The
organization saves people from destitution, drunks and alcohol addiction and from despair
through giving them emergency assistance like food and clothes, transformative initiatives and
the Gospel theology. Alcohol addiction is a problem as it strains the liver exposing the victim to
the threat of liver destruction or failure of functioning. It also causes nausea and pain in the
abdomen thus resulting in a poor appetite and weight loss. Problems like hunger, lack of good
health care and poor hygiene are caused by poverty. The implications of poverty are largely
interconnected such that no one problem happens alone. Bad hygiene makes a person prone to
ailments and hunger and unavailability of safe water also exposes people to diseases. The “souls
harbor rescue mission” sets to serve the people with lunch daily weekdays and this has made it a
community center. The different guests served by souls harbor rescue mission include men and
women experiencing hunger, those who live in the streets, the poor, the abused and those battling
addiction. The local families and also the aged in the nearby housing blocks are served and
offered free food, clothes, personal effects, and household stuff. I was volunteering there on
Tuesday, Feb. 26th of this year. I served meals, cleaned the tables and washed the dishes. After
the meals, I engaged some of the beneficiaries of the project in a one on one talk where I listened
to their concerns, the challenges they are facing in their lives and what they wanted to do about
them.
We purposed to arrive at the venue on time to make sure that from the onset as we can
help in preparing the food, washing the dishes, and cleaning the place. We wanted to engage the
people present, give hope to those almost giving up, talk to them in a friendly way, listen to their

issues and devise ways of helping them lead a better life far from the challenges they are
experiencing. The main reason for volunteering was to help serve the food, distribute it and clean
the utensils.
Project goals
There were three main problems identified in the project which are poverty, addiction,
and homelessness. We also aimed at giving hope to someone to take the first steps towards
health and healing and as well to make a difference in someone’s life. One of the main goals
was to help homeless individuals get health and social services are also among the goals of the
organization. The second goal was to find better strategies for preventing drug utilization as well
as its effects. The third goal is to completely eradicate poverty within the community (ILO,
2016).
Intervention strategies
