The 2017 State if Obesity Report by Robert Wood Foundation and Trust for America’s
Health showed that the obesity problem in America is escalating. According to the report, six states
had their overall obesity rate increase, and no single state saw a decrease. The report also showed
that in 2016, 36.6 percent of American adults were obese. These statistics indicate that obesity is
a major public health concern in the US. The high obesity rate can translate into non-communicable
diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, leading to a high economic burden on
the healthcare system.
Fad Diets
Consequently, many Americans are turning to various fad diets that, it is claimed, can help
them lose weight quickly. Kim et al. (2015) defined a fad diet as any weight loss plan that claims
