Why do ions need assistance crossing the cell?

I have been reading through my textbook and have been unable to find anything even remotely related to this question. Could you help me at all?

Permeability across the cell membrane is depended on the size and electrical charge of the particles.The membrane is highly permeable to fat soluble molecules unlike the polar ones. The permeability to charged molecular species (ions) is very low because of electrical charge . Therefore passage of  ions is assisted by the presence of specific membrane transport proteins.
