I have been reading through my textbook and have been unable to find anything even remotely related to this question. Could you help me at all?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Permeability across the cell membrane is depended on the size and electrical charge of the particles. The membrane is highly permeable to fat soluble molecules unlike the polar ones. The permeability to charged molecular species (ions) is very low because of electrical charge . Therefore passage of  ions is assisted by the presence of specific membrane transport proteins.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
