Abstract

A family health assessment is scientific tool that was developed by Marjorie Gordon in 1987 to
create a health database for patients. The researcher of this paper analyses a multi race family of a
white American father and a Hispanic mother who are blessed with three daughters. The
researcher uses the information retrieved from the mother to create a Family Health Assessment
and later comes up with a nursing diagnosis and a Nursing care plan. This process was
accomplished through keen observation and listening skills. The researcher interviewed the
informant using open ended questions.

Introduction
Blood connections between members of a family make people vulnerable to each other’s
problems. Even in family setups where members are not too close to each other, if something bad
happens to any of them, more often than not it affects the lives of the others. It is therefore
necessary for clinicians to get family background information while dealing with patients. For
instance, some health problems are genetic and once a healthcare provider is aware of this,
he/she can embark on the most appropriate treatment plan as opposed to conducting a lot of tests
here and there when he/she has no information about the underlying genetic condition.
Additionally, caregivers can identify signs and symptoms of a certain genetic disease and advice
a patient accordingly. To help health care providers create a health database for their patients, a
