Episode 01: A Bar Fight Walks into the Justice Center
This episode talks about the Justice Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The center is huge,
occupying a huge city block, the building is pleasant, they look ugly, described as "hideous, but
practical.” It has existed for over five decades now. The Justice Center holds several offices that
are a part of the justice system (Episode 01: A Bar Fight Walks into the Justice Center, n.d).
These offices include the city and area courts, the region prison, prosecutor's offices, the sheriff's
office, and central office for the Cleveland police. The building has a vertical hierarchical
structure, where the management pass orders and info from the highest point of the authoritative
pyramid down toward the base.

halfway up the building, are for more severe crimes. The prosecutor's office is on the 9th floor,
where some detectives go most of the times. The court stenographers are polite, moving around
different officers using the elevator. Defense attorneys are also running up and down the
building, talking to each other in low tones (Episode 01: A Bar Fight Walks into the Justice
Center, n.d). Persistently complaining about judges who have their judge lifts, so they can't hear
the conversations. The lift pillars, apparently, are the offenders and their families, and
respondents and their families. Some of the time, those families happen to be one.
The elevator equalizes people in a way, as it brings different individuals together with
their differences. The shoulder to shoulder closeness, however, speaks the opposite, that people
are different. The narrator met a black woman in the elevator holding a portable speaker and
commented on the track playing which the black woman responds with little interest. The Justice

jobs, and the black individuals working as clerks and security guards. Majority of the accused
people are black too, the power imbalance in the Justice Center is so evident, making it too ironic
to be a Justice Center when it already portrays injustice. The narrator is a reporter, interested in
reporting crimes in Cleveland, and believes that other regions are struggling with the same kind
