What is a leader? What is a manager?
A leader can be defined as a person who commands or rather leads an organization, group
or even a country. Different institutions depend on leadership in order for them to achieve their
set goals and objectives. Leaders coordinate various activities in their institutions hence ensuring
there is a flow of the activities. Leaders influence their juniors hence being able to transform
them effectively. Through exercising their powers, leaders are able to control and coordinate the
activities of their juniors in an institution. Different styles of leadership styles are applied by
leaders while running their organizations. Democratic style of leadership, transformational and
translation style of leadership are some of the major styles applied by leaders while leading their
organizations. Effective leadership of an institution or rather organizations contribute
significantly to its improved performance in the market as well as boosting its competitiveness in
the industry.
A manager, on the other hand, can be defined as a person who is tasked with the
responsibility of administering or rather controlling an organization. Managers act as leaders in
organizations since they steer the activities of the organizations in the industry. Effective
management of an organization leads to its improved productivity as well as competitiveness in
the industry. Managers like leaders should possess different traits and skills in order to make
them effective in their operations. The major skills that a manager should have included;
effective communication, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills, analytical skills, and
good team building skills (Bolman & Deal, 2017). These traits and skills make leaders as well as
managers successful in their leadership activities. Leaders are managers in their institutions but
not all managers are leaders. This means that a person can be promoted in an organization to the
managerial position but fail terribly since they do not possess leadership skills. Holding a

leadership position makes one responsible for making quality decisions as well as solving
different challenges that a firm faces in the industry.
