The family health assessment is a dimension of nursing that gives nursing a
whole new look allowing nurses to diagnose families, interpret the observations thereby
formulating nursing care plans for these families. A health assessment is nurses'
modern tool of health promotion achieved by asking family members sets of questions
that allows a nurse to generate a diagnosis. The evaluation process involves a
framework of Gordon's 11 functional health patterns including health management,
nutritional-metabolic pattern, exercise patterns, cognitive patterns, rest patterns, self perception, sexuality, stress tolerance, and beliefs. Information collected using
questions following this particular frame allows a nurse to interpret and advice a family
on the way forward with regards to health. This paper provides a summary on a critical
analysis of a family's presence thereby providing necessary a care plan and depicting a
nurse's role in the process.
