Discussion
Legal and Moral Merits of Military Interventions after the Cold War
Humanitarian intervention is the use of military force to address issues of human rights
violations resulting from the home government's inability to act. Under the United Nations
Charter, there are legal and moral implications identified. The Post Cold War era saw an
increased level of humanitarian intervention (Hoag, n.d.). The legal benefits include the
increased protection on human rights, increased surveillance on government and other state
actors’ activities in countries, brought justice to the afflicted after the war, outlined conduct of
military in humanitarian intervention, and increased the role of the United Nations in observance
and guaranteeing universal human rights. Despite these legal benefits, the use of military
intervention has been exploited by some powerful nations to exploit opportunities of personal
interests in affected countries.
