1. Purpose of the lab
The main purpose of the lab was to distinguish the bacteria’s using different tests. The type of tests
performed include the urease test, citrate test, SIM test, mannitol salt agar and Blood Agar.
From the urease test, the purpose is to separate the bacteria on the ability to use urea as the sole
nitrogen source. We expect that the media contain Urea to turns from the color yellow to pink in
high PH. A negative urease test would result in a yellowish media and a positive results would
contain a pink media.
From the citrate test, the purpose is to evaluate to use the bacterium to use its citrate as the only
source of carbon. We expect that if the bacteria uses the citrate energy source, the PH will increase
resulting to a color change from green to blue and hence bacteria growth.
The purpose of the SIM test is to test a bacterium ability for Sulfur reduction, Indole production,
and Motility. We expect the media to turn black around the stab line for a positive test of...
