The tradition to parenthood is one that requires adjusting and adapting as becoming new parents. After having a first child there is a change in marital satisfaction (Volling, Oh, Gonzalez, Kuo, & Yu, 2015). I will be discussing how I would apply task five, adjusting to changed communication patterns, to a family. The married couple I chose is in their late thirties and had their first child two months ago. The mother has chosen to be a stay at home while the father works full-time. They have been fighting a lot lately and he seems angry at her that she is home with the baby while he works during the day. Since having the baby there is altered communication between the two. They are sleeping in different rooms because he expects her to take care of the baby at night while he sleeps. She is feeling exhausted and stressed while taking care of the baby and the household. She is holding in feelings of anger that he does not help her at night, and she is upset and sad that they no longer communicate. I chose adjusting to changed communication patterns as the developmental task and how I would apply it to this family. I would sit down with this couple to talk to them about their communication patterns. I will suggest to the couple that they use effective communication patterns such as active listening and using “I” statements (Rowe Kaakinen, Padgett Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, Harmon Hanson, 2015). The couple needs to tell each other about their frustrations. If the husband is lacking skills in caring for the baby I can help him with the area that he needs help in or I can suggest a parenting class to him. I could also come up with some strategies for the wife to get some rest such as the husband allowing the wife to take a nap when he gets home from work or him helping with the household duties when he gets home from work. I would also suggest that they set a specific allotted time once a week for date night (Rowe Kaakinen, Padgett Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, Harmon Hanson, 2015). By setting a time to leave the house together without the baby this will allow them time away from the baby as well as promoting communication with each other. The wife should also be assessed for postpartum depression since she is experiencing stress and mood alterations. Studies have shown that ten to fifteen percent of first time mothers are affected by postpartum depression (Epifanio, Genna, De Luca, Roccella, & La Grutta, 2015). References Epifanio, M. Adjusting to Changed Communication Patterns
Welcoming a newborn brings joy to the parents and other members of the community.
However, it brings additional challenges, and both parents must be prepared to cope with them.
After a child is born, parents are forced to adjust their communication patterns so that they can
communicate with the newborn. According to Kaakinen et al. (2018), adjusting communication
patterns helps to foster smooth communication between the infant and the parents, and to ensure
that each of them can understand, and respond to communication cues from the other party. For
this paper, we will undertake task 5 “A...
