TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

The paper is about trigeminal nerve, its function and the associated disorder; trigeminal
neuralgia. The management options that relates to trigeminal neuralgia are as well dealt with.
Trigeminal nerve is one of the twelve cranial nerves that originate from the brain. To be precise,
it is the fifth cranial nerve. Of all the cranial nerves, trigeminal nerve is the largest. It has three
main divisions; ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular nerves. The nerve originates from the
posterior fossa of brain stem. It originates from a single motor nucleus and three sensory nuclei.
The nuclei run to the medulla up from the midbrain. The main general function of the nerve is to
provide sensory supply to the head and face (Pillai, 2018). Besides, trigeminal nerve provides
motor supply to the muscles of mastication. However, each division of the nerve has its specific
role that defines it.
Ophthalmic nerve, further divides into three branches, the frontal, nasocilliary and the
lacrimal nerves. These nerves provide sensory supply to the skin and mucous membrane of the
parts that comprise frontonasal prominence such as the dorsum of the nose, the upper lid and its
conjunctiva, the scalp and forehead, frontal and ethmoidal sinus and the cornea. Besides, a branch
from ophthalmic nerve together with another from facial nerve offers parasympathetic innervation
to the lacrimal gland.
Maxillary nerve has fourteen terminal bra...
