Description

The history of correctional institutions is well documented. Correctional institutions (jails and prisons) house individuals who are awaiting trial and serving both short- and long-term sentences. Correctional officers are responsible for the monitoring, treatment, and supervision of individuals who have been found guilty by a court of law.

For this assignment, we will take you inside a look at the "Most Violent Prison 2016 - Part 1 - Maximum Security" (video source: https://youtu.be/XGyxXGJWA2I).

  • Describe the main methods Sergeant Baldwin and his staff use to maintain order and safety in the prison. Take a position on the effectiveness, risks, pros and cons, and ethics of these methods.
  • Choose one (1) of the inmates profiled in this video--Terry Dibble, Simkayta Winfield, Jerico Jones, or Gregory Crowder--and discuss their situation. Explain how they ended up at Statefield, the main issues they described facing, and the methods they use to cope with their time in prison.
  • Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed guards has on the violence level and overall safety within this prison.
  • Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors can have on the prisoners' mental status.
  • Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates against each of these identified issues.
  • Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could be taken to improve conditions (e.g., security and safety, abuse and use of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for your position.

Main methods used in maintaining order and safety
Sergeant Baldwin and the rest of the staff maintain order and safety by keeping
inmates locked in their cells for a few hours during the day, and at times for 24 hours. The
exercise yard, where inmates closely interact, is also closely guarded because prisoners are
likely to get in to fights once they are out of their cells after lockdown. Potential for violence
in the yard is addressed by restricting the number and movement of inmates to 20 at a time
(Prison, 2016). At the exercise yard, officers also wait with weapons for any violence which
may arise. These armed officers are allowed to use these weapons when necessary.
These various methods have been effective in ensuring that the prison is safe and
secure. The measures also maintain order because staff members are able to monitor the
offenders. Most of the inmates are at risk of violence from fellow prisoners and from external
attackers, hence staying locked in their cells is also for their own protection. However,
keeping inmates under lock can results to boredom, and demoralizes them because they are
unable to access basic rehabilitation and recreational facilities. The long alone time in a
confined space can also result to abuse of illicit drugs as a means of breaking the boredom of
being locked for long periods. Being confined cuts them out from the rest of the world and
therefore they are overwhelmed by the loneliness.
Locking inmates for a long period of time is therefore unethical and cruel, hence
lockdowns should be done moderately, and only when it has been ascertained that the
prisoner is in danger, or poses danger to others. This prolonged lockdown should only occur
if one frequently starts fights, attacks a fellow inmate, or threatens or attacks a member of
staff.

Inmate Profile
Gregory Crowder

Gregory Crowder, who is serving a 60 years sentence, has adopted a lonely life in
State field because his gay sexual orientation has led to several abuses. He ended up at State
field after committing a murder crime of luring a man in to a trap and beating him up to
death. Crowder and his friends beat the man to death with the intention of stealing his money
to buy drugs. In State field, he lives in fear of fellow inmates and of officers. Since the nature
of his crime is money related, he claims that while in another prison, he was assaulted by
some officers who thought that he had a lot of money which he supposedly hid. He also states
that he was worried of his family being targeted. He claims that these officers threatened,
beat, and raped him, and he ultimately sued the jail and his case was settled out of court. He
fears his cellmates, especially being physically and sexually assaulted. He deals with his
fears by refusing to go out of his cell. He feels that his nature of crime and sexual orientation
have made him very vulnerable to attacks and abuse.
