Introduction to Foreign Aids
Foreign aid refers to the transfer of resources voluntarily from a given country to a
different one. The shift entails any capital flow to third world or developing countries. A country
that is developing many at times has no significant industrial base and has characteristics of slow
or low Human Development Index (HDI). Also, foreign aid can either be in a grant or loan form.
Possibly, it can be a hard or soft loan. Such a difference implies that, upon the aid repayment, a
need for foreign currency means that the investment is a hard one (Collier & Hoeffler, 2007). A
soft loan is the one given through a domestic currency. Hard loans are lent by The World Bank,
while its affiliate’s loans are taken as soft loans. It is, therefore, one of the most significant
foreign exchange sources.
There are various reasons as to why foreign aid is given. Mostly, it may be provided as a
diplomatic approval sign, or for strengthening an ally in the military. Other reasons for giving
foreign aid include rewarding a particular government for the desired behavior by the donor,
with the aim of extending the cultural influence of the donor. That is aimed at providing the
required infrastructure by the doctor for the extraction of resources from the recipient nation or
