How do police agencies at the local, state, and federal level recruit, hire, and train employees?
In recruiting, hiring, and training new police staff, law enforcement agencies encounter
challenges that make it hard to maintain high-level law enforcement agencies. Also, limitation
and scarcity of resources make police have a hard time distributing their services across all
communities equally. Creating interest among officers to maintain community service is done
through motivational rather than criticism (Gill, Weisburd & Telep et al., 2017). Therefore, when
recruiting, police agencies ensure that the public is fully aware of the exercise. Similarly, those
interested in joining the workforce should be given an opportunity to do so without
discrimination or prejudice. Applicants get to know of vacancies through internet, brochures and
career trade fairs. Also, police agencies advertise for scholarship programs that applicants apply
to try their lack. Nowadays these agencies are recruiting intellectuals who not only reduce
training cost but also improve the department in general.
Another technique used by agencies is employment of a training curriculum that is wellbalanced. Also, there is an introduction of three types of police training, and they include inservice training, field training, and basic training. Basic training teaches techniques and skills
that are basic in conducting daily police work. It usually comprises of topics such as interacting
with citizens, cultural and ethnic diversity, and emergency response, use of force, criminal law,
and police procedures. Field training is the next face where new officers get to learn how to use
their skills and knowledge in real life scenarios (Gill, Weisburd &Telep, et al., 2017). During this
training, new officers are introduced into police subculture, and agencies get to understand their
different reaction on diverse situations. In-Service training comprises of learning activities such
as conferences, classes, and workshop where police get to learn on various specialized activities



in community policing. Better training for police is necessary for ensuring that officers on the
ground are disciplined and provide services to all citizens without discrimination.
How can agencies ensure they are promoting diversity by hiring women and minorities?
There is a debate on hiring of women and minorities by police agencies and whether it
lowers the standards of law enforcers when providing service to the public. However,
diversifying of departments in law enforcement agencies has been shown to improve community
policing significantly. In diversification, agencies focus more on service aspects as compared to
tactical aspects (Gill, Weisburd & Telep et al., 2017). For instance, New Orleans Police
Department (NOPD) is one good example of a law enforcement agency that balances their entire
police department racially, and candidates are recruited from all races. For minority
communities in many states in America, being an officer is an opportunity for an individual to
alleviate themselves from poverty and assist their family members.
Missouri, Illinois, and Michigan are following similar footsteps to those of New Orleans
when it comes to embracing diversification in their police department. Also, a state with small
rural areas recruits athletes to join the forces. Recruitment programs focus more on developing
candidates’ careers over the years. Diversity assists in developing positive relations with
communities that police maintain law and order. Police are also partnering with communities that
they serve which is proving to be mutually effective as police are able to get intelligence on
illegal activities going on in communities.
How significant is stress in police training? Why should it be included in training programs?
Police work affects their life issues, mental health, and physical health thereby brings in
problems in their relations. Signs of stress among officers include a decline in performance,
misconduct allegations, policy violations, an increase in complaints, poorer decision-making



ability, slower reaction time, and an increase in absenteeism (Smith, Shatté, Perlman, et al.
2018). In the long run, stress significantly affects officer in a way that it jeopardizes their ability
