Description

Statement of the assignment

Researching an Issue to Create a Call to Action

This research assignment involves idea generation (freewriting), focused research, synthesis of collected data and generated text, and presentation of findings in the form of a short-length research paper.

Elements of this assignment

  • Statement of the issue at hand (1 page) which expresses your understanding of the context in which this issue is situated
  • Dialogue (two 1-page position statements, each of which reflects your findings on two conflicting sides of your researched topic)
  • Persuasive essay, or peroration, drawn from research (1-2 pages; this will most likely become the draft of your “call to action” which proposes a solution)
  • Works Cited page, along with a photocopy or printout of the first body page of each source used
  • Final Draft of paper which incorporates your argument and the major positions at stake within this topic (1000 word essay, 4-6 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point standard font)
  • Metaletter

Research Topics

Your assignment for this research essay is to analyze a current social, environmental, or political issue and provide a recommendation for action. These topics are quite broad; for this essay project you will choose a topic and narrow it sufficiently to create a compelling, researchable, and arguable thesis.

For each of these topics, literally millions of pages have already been written. What I want from you is an exploration of the topic that gets several layers beneath the surface. What is the biggest debate in your topic area? Explore it in your dialogue. Then decide for yourself what matters, what people need to know, and what needs to happen. You might argue for systematic healthcare for children in America; you might argue for (or against) tying high-stakes testing to school funding; you might argue that leveling the standards in schools hurts more students than it helps, or that VA funding and support need to increase. Whatever it is, drill down, get the meaty information, and see what seems to matter.

You’ll need at least 2 sources for this essay.

Please note: Several topics are off limits for this project:

  • Gun Control
  • Abortion
  • the Death Penalty
  • The Wall
  • anything to do with Welfare.

That leaves open many, many other topics, and I look forward to seeing what you might choose to pursue!

The selected topic for this assignment is the legalization of marijuana. Also known as
cannabis, marijuana is a psychoactive drug that is used in many areas as a medicinal drug, as a
recreational drug, or sometimes used illegally. The legality of marijuana is a topic that has
been widely debated and one that has led to different classifications in different parts of the
world. Based on data compiled by WHO (2016), marijuana is illegal in most of the nations
around the world. This is more so the case with developing nations. In Africa, for instance,
only South Africa has legalized marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes while
Zimbabwe has legalized its use for medicinal purposes only. According to WHO (2016), the
legality of marijuana differs from one region to another and, while a significant number of
Western nations have legalized it for medicinal purposes or both medicinal and recreational
purposes, many of these nations tend to have restrictions that govern the use of this drug. This
means that misuse of the drug can still violate the legal framework.
Marijuana is being legalized in many regions as time progresses. The conditions that
different nations have for its legality differ from one another. In fact, decriminalization is a
term that is commonly used in many regions in place of legalization as the legality of the drug
is still contentious. The debate on the legality of the drug has escalated in the recent past and
attracted the attention of many policymakers as a result of the significance of the topic. In the
US, as many as 28 states have already legalized its use albeit at different levels of control.
Notably, there is a limit to the maximum weight of marijuana that one can possess in the
different states that have legalized the drug in the US, and while the most common maximum
allowed weight in many of these states is one oun...
