Traffic signs are regulated by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The perimeter of a rectangular traffic sign is 80 inches. Also, its length is 14 inches longer than its width. Find the dimensions of this sign.

The perimeter equation is

2W+2L=P

Well our perimeter is 80.

So 80=2W+2L

We know that our Length=14 inches longer than our width

So L=14+W

Substitute L=14+w into our equation

80=2W+2(14+w)

80=2W+28+2W

80=4W+28

80-28=4W

52=4W

W=13

Thus our width is 13inches.

Substitute W=13 into L=14+W

L=14+13=27

Thus our Length is 27 inches.

NOTE:

27(2)+13(2)=80 CHECK!
