Introduction

Social media is a phenomenon that has transformed communication and interactions of
people globally. Nonetheless, the use of social networking sites is not a new concept since it has
been developing since the beginning of human interactions. In the 1990s, many social networks
were developed including Asian Avenue, Black Planet, Six Degrees, and MoveOn (Macnamara
& Zerfass, 2012). Also, blogging services such as Epinions and Blogger were developed.
Epinions allowed customers to write or read reviews of a product. In early 2000, social media
received a huge boost with the increased creation of networking sites. This transformed and
boosted the interactions of people and business that shared a common interest in friendship,
education, and movies. In 2004, popular social networking sites such as Mixi, and Facebook
evolved. Other forms of social media such as Myspace and Twitter followed in 2006 followed.
Currently, various social media sites are available for personal and individual interaction that
include Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube (Macnamara & Zerfass, 2012).
In the past, businesses have reaped various benefits in the use of social media. The use of
social media in marketing has enabled businesses to strengthen their brand experience that
supports brand building. With social media, businesses have become attractive to customers
since these sites have acted as a powerful means of communicating the brand attribute and brand
value to enable open ways of communication. In the past decade, social media has impacted
business in marketing, communication, and hiring. Social media has become an important
avenue for creating brand awareness and developing new stakeholder forums (Thangaveh &
Vanmathi, 2015, p.349). This form of marketing has allowed businesses to create virtual
communities where customers can express their wants, needs, and values. Social media sites
such as YouTube, blogs, LinkedIn, and Facebook have become major sources of recruitment.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Approximately 80 percent of business use LinkedIn to meet potential employees (Cardon &
