The United States is considered the highest spending nation in healthcare costs. In 2016
alone, more than 17.8 percent of the country’s GDP went to healthcare. Reuters reports that the
healthcare costs are expected to remain high at 17.1 percent until 2026. High healthcare costs are
associated with high quality of care, but this does not seem like the case. A majority of the
Americans continue to complain of low-quality healthcare with most of the health services
inaccessible to the public. For this reason, the federal government considered improving the
quality of healthcare through the Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Obama in
2010. The program has resulted in a myriad of benefits including a reduction in the cost of care,
and improvement in the quality of healthcare. Therefore, spending more of our national wealth
on medical care is good.
