What kinds of symptoms should be viewed as indicators of PTSD?

Once a person has been exposed to a traumatic event, they may experience negative after-effects, otherwise known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Here's a general list of symptoms of PTSD:

1. Reliving the event: nightmares, flashbacks, triggers

2. Avoiding situations that remind you of the event

3. Negative changes in beliefs and feelings

4. Feeling keyed up (hyper-arousal)

The way psychiatrists and psychologists diagnose patients with PTSD is by following a code/manual known as the DSM-5, developed by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.  Here's the link for that site: http://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/PTSD-overview/dsm5_criteria_ptsd.asp
