Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Once a person has been exposed to a traumatic event, they may experience negative after-effects, otherwise known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Here's a general list of symptoms of PTSD:

1. Reliving the event: nightmares, flashbacks, triggers

2. Avoiding situations that remind you of the event

3. Negative changes in beliefs and feelings

4. Feeling keyed up (hyper-arousal)

I'm providing you with a link to help clarify some of the symptoms. http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/PTSD-overview/basics/symptoms_of_ptsd.asp

The way psychiatrists and psychologists diagnose patients with PTSD is by following a code/manual known as the DSM-5, developed by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.  Here's the link for that site: http://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/PTSD-overview/dsm5_criteria_ptsd.asp

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
