Is compulsive hoarding a subtype of OCD or a distinct disorder? Discuss both sides

Sep 12th, 2015

Thank you for the opportunity to help you.

Compulsive hoarding was first included in the 5th edition of the DSM, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The DSM includes compulsive hoarding as part of OCD, obsession-compulsive disorder.  Nevertheless, there are studies [2] that point to the fact that the current chemical treatment of OCD is not effective in treating compulsive hoarding, and therefore compulsive hoarding may be better defined as a distinct disorder.
