Assessment: Each student will complete an individual project/activity that increases their awareness of safety issues related to their personal lives and develops skills that enables them to increase their safety or the safety of others. A 1-2 page written essay and documentation of project/activity completion will be submitted to the instructor that identifies the project/activity, discusses what the student learned, and explains the impact the project/activity had on the student. Projects must be approved by the instructor (credit is not available for activities completed prior to the start of the course). Appropriate projects include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Completion of a Hunter Safety Course

2. Completion of First Aid, CPR, or AED training

3. Completion of an on-line independent study course through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There are several appropriate courses that can be found at http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/crslist.asp

4. Completion of a Lifeguard training course

5. Completion of Community Emergency Response Training (CERT)

6. Attendance at a safety and health conference (approved by instructor)

7. Completion of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) on-line course

1. Completion of a Hunter Safety Course
Hunter Safety Course is a knowledge, skills, and attitude instructor led course meant to
equip one with necessary skills to be a safe hunter. The course covered several key skillsets that
necessary for hunting. First, we explored various features of the firearm such as actions, safeties,
magazines, and sights. This was done for different firearms. There was also lessons on firearm
cleaning and storage. I then learned basic skills of good marksmanship and accuracy using a
handgun, shotgun, and a rifle. I then learned hunting skills which involved preparation,
strategies, and vital shots on different animals. I also learnt how primitive tools such as bow and
arrow can be used in hunting. I was then taught safety during hunting which explored the issue of
safety in different environments. The course also covered issues of ethical and responsible
hunting, survival skills, and basic knowledge of wildlife. Taking the course has had an impact on
my perspective towards hunting. I got to understand how easy it is to injure oneself or others
during hunting if certain safety precautions are overlooked. I also got understand how damaging
irresponsible unmonitored hunting can be on the survival of wildlife.
