1.0: Abstract
All organizations possesses a lot of assets including physical such as computers, tables and
chairs. These assets are prone to theft since there exists a number of thieves within our society.
They may exist within the organization and / or from outside. In the Universities, computers
dominates as they uses internet facilities for academic research and data storage. Laptops are
known to dominate the facility as they are portable and more reliable than the commonly
installed desktops because they can store some charge with them. However, this also makes them
a target for thieves. Their markets is also readily available. This has made it the most targeted
asset in the universities. Many universities experiences a number of people moving in and out of
the facility despite not being part of the facility. It therefore makes it hard for those tasked to
watch over them and owners to ensure that they are safe. In this paper, I will write a Facility
Security Plan aimed at securing laptops in Universities.
2.0: Introduction
As stated earlier, securing laptops is one of the greatest challenges in the Universities. Despite
them being in large numbers, losing one laptop can be costly to the whole institution because it
may contain data that is of great importance to the owner. It is therefore very important to ensure
that the device is safe and not exposed to thieves. There exists three types of security
mechanisms for laptops including technical, procedural and physical mechanisms. Physical
mechanisms will ensure the installation of cameras, doors and so on to isolate thieves from
accessing the device and / or identify the thief whenever they try to steel it. Technical
mechanisms involves using software to track the laptop and the data that it may contain. This
will help recover the device and / or the data itself. Procedural mechanisms will involve
measures put by the organization to regulate the mistakes done by their employees that may lead

to theft. For example, an employee may fail to close the door and that exposes the device to a
thief. This plan will incorporate all these measures and will be properly put in the desired manner
to minimize or curb the problem.
3.0: Application and Scope
This is an important component that should be respected by everybody as it ensures that the
school’s and student’s laptops are secured from theft. This plan will be applicable in all the
University’s facilities which includes all university buildings. All students, lecturers, managers
and all the other employees within the facility will be required to subject themselves to the
guidelines outlined in this document. The plan is meant to give an initial guide that will give a
framework to all other frameworks that may be developed for certain departments. Some minor
changes can be made based on which department the framework is meant to serve. However,
nothing should be eliminated from this basic guideline. Adjustments will only apply where more
clarity or specification is needed.
4.0: Document Control
4.1: Identification
The document is referred to as Facility Security Plan to Curb Laptop Theft. This is the only name
that will be used to identify this document.
4.2: Storage
This document will be stored in an electronic format. It should be accessible to all the individuals
that are entitled to ensure that the security of the laptops is withheld. It should therefore, be
stored in a central point just to make it easier for every personnel to access.

Copies of this plan should be retained for two years or until they are superseded. Sometimes,
retention may attract conflicts. In this case, the requirement for retai...
