History of Oklahoma
Oklahoma is a state found in The United States. It is found in the Southern Central
Region. It borders Kansas on the North, Texas on the South, Arkansas on the East, and New
Mexico on the west. The word Oklahoma is derived from the word Okla which means red
persons. Oklahoma is a state that is occupied mostly by people from the Indian origin. The
region was first explored by a Spanish citizen called “Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in
1541.” 1The region was almost bought by Americans from France in 1830. The Americans
introduced American slavery in Indian Territory. At that time, it used to be called the Indian
Territory a territory which would later become Oklahoma. During this period, more than half
a million Africans were slaves in the southern territories. The following Indian societies had
the most slaves who came from both Africa and African Americans; Choctaw, Chickasaw,
Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole. The Seminole and the Creek were the majority “During
Andrew Jackson's time the Creeks and Seminoles (Muscogulges) were the largest group of
Indians living on the frontier.” 2However, some slaves managed to run away from their
masters and sought refuge in some Indian societies which received them warmly. Though
some organizations treated the black slaves well, the Indians of American origin began
purchasing the African Americans as slaves. Before the Civil war started, the majority of the
land in the state was free. It was open for anyone who wanted to settle in the state. During
this time, the state was known for ranching and farming. These were the main core activities
since the slaves had specialized skills in these sectors. However, oil would later be
discovered, and people started moving into the state. The discovery of natural resources was a
turning point for the state.

Slavery in the region began in the 1830s. During this time, the natives owned vast
pieces of land that they would farm and keep animals. They would farm crops such as cotton
and other crops and sell them to make a profit. They brought in slaves to help them cultivate
these lands. They mainly practiced subsistence agriculture. It’s where both the masters and
the slaves would labor together to ensure they accomplished their goals. The slaves would
come in from the west in the 1830s and 1840s when the federal government declared that the
nation was not part of the southern states. The slaves were commonly found among the
Cherokees since they had the highest number of slaves. The other societies only had a few
numbers of slaves3.
Being a slave was difficult. Their living conditions were harsh. They would be forced
to work for longer hours, diseases and deprivation of removal. They would carry out the
tougher jobs which involved the use of energy such as they loaded the wagons, cleared the
roads, and led livestock while moving from one place to another. The wealthy and prominent
people in the society had the most slaves; they had considerable political power in the
community hence had the power to make decisions “Most slaves in Indian Territory were
owned by wealthy and prominent men, many of whom wielded considerable political
power.”4 The slaves worked as agricultural laborers in their farms. They would not only
cultivate for their masters' food but also profit. Other slaves were casual laborers. They would
work as seamstresses and blacksmiths. Some Indian slaveholders would be used in the
process of buying and selling slaves. They would often carry out their business with the white
slaveholders from the neighboring states such as Texas and Arkansas.
Some masters had more massive plantations compared to others. Those who worked
in the larger plantations...
