A set of linear equations can be solved by two methods

(i) Elimination method

(ii) Substitution method

Both methods work equally fine.

Here i will used substitution method

Let number the equations as below

x+y=5            (1)

y=3                 (2)

Now use (2) in (1) that is replace y with 3 in (1), as shown below

x+3=5

or x=5-3=2

x=2

Now let us check that our answer make sense

use both values of x and y in (1) to check that equality sign(=) is correct

2+3=5 is a correct statement.
