The goal of the elimination method, is to get a common coefficient, for the two equations, and subtract them to get a variable by itself.

Step 1: Notice that 8y is the same in both equations, thus all we have to do is subtract the two equations.

x+8y=57

-x+8y=39

x-(-x)=2x

8y-8y=0

57-39=18

2x=18 (divide by 2 from both sides)

x=9.

Step 2: Substitute x=9 into the first equation to solve for y

9+8y=57 (subtract 9 from both sides)

8y=48 (divide by 8 from both sides)

y=6

Step 3:

Check your work!

9+8(6)=57 check!

-9+8(6)=39 check!

Thus your coordinate pair is (9,6)
