Step 1: Notice we do not have a common coefficient. But if we add the two equations, the x's will still go away

x+8y=26

-x+6y=16

x-x=0

8y+6y=14y

26+16=42

14y=42 (divide by 14 to both sides)

y=3

Step 2: Substitute y=3 into the first equation

x+8y=26

x+8(3)=26 (multiply 8 x 3)

x+24=26 (subtract 24 from both sides)

x=2


Step 3: check your work

2+8(3)=26 check!

-2+6(3)=16 check!


Thus our ordered pair is (2,3).
