How to algebraically determine the positive and negative x values for an absolute value function?

This is for graphing an absolute value function equation. I don't understand this at all and really need help.

I will explain this by giving examples that will show clearly the meaning of absolute value

For example given a function

f(x)=|x|=absolute value (x)

This function has two meanings below

  (i)f(x)=-x

 (ii) f(x)=x

Another example

f(x)=|x-3|

The meanings are

(i) f(x)=-(x-3)=-x+3

(ii) f(x)=x-3
