THEORY GUIDED PRACTICE

Introduction

As we are all aware nurses apply theories in each and every aspect of their work in
order to improve quality of care they accord to their patients. There is need to understand that
the nursing practice needs to be considered under the general ideas that are under the general
regarding the role of knowledge in the nursing practice itself. As we all know the general
knowledge of nursing practice should act as a guide. Also, as much as the nursing practice is
seen as a human practice it should also be seen have a basis of knowledge rather than
sensitivity. It should also be embedded with knowledge. The context under which the theory
should be tested should be on the basis of knowledge type and also the content. Therefore the
need for a theory because when the clinical practice no longer reflects the best scientific
practice then the result is substandard health care (McEwen&Wills, 2017).
For my paper I choose a long-term acute care hospital that hospitalizes new patients
with various complex conditions. The patients who visit the hospital have different
backgrounds and diverse cultures. Their conditions range from respiratory failure, sepsis,
pneumonia, heart diseases among other diverse ailments. The hospital’s mission is to provide
the best healthcare at affordable rates. The main core values at the health facility are
teamwork and resourcefulness when it comes to conflict resolution. When one combines the
mission, values, and the patients population of this particular healthcare facility the best
theory would be the RAM theory which has everything to do with adaptation.
Clinical Setting
In our hospital set up some of the patients are oxygen dependent, others are on
advanced medication such as being put on drips, others require wound care, surgical
interventions, and other forms of disease management. In the hospital set up it is possible for
a patient to move from being stable to being critical within a very short time frame.

Additionally, you will find that in such a facility the nurses can either be beginners meaning
that they have little experience or experts who are quite experienced in the work they do. In
our hospital we have a ratio of one nurse is assigned to four patients per shift.
Origin of the theory
The Roy adaptation model is a deductive cognitive knowledge. It was developed by
Sister Callista Roy. She came up with the model after her teacher asked about the definition
of the goal of nursing. In consideration of the goal of nursing as promoting adaptation she
came up with a framework that viewed people as having the abilities to deal with the changes
in the environment they find themselves in. This meant that the help of clinical nurses who
quite understood people and their environments their adaptations could move effectively
towards health itself (S...
