Susannah Oland was born Susannah Woodhouse Culverwell on 7th February
1818. She was born to English parents Betty and George Woodhouse Culverwell in Somerset,
England (Guildford, 1997). At the age of 24, she married John James Dunn Oland at an Anglican
church in Bristol, England. The couple bore nine children, their last born being George
Woodhouse Culverwell who took up his mother’s surname. In the early days of their marriage,
John worked as a tobacconist and a tear and beer dealer (Guildford, 1997). He however studied
accounting after going bankrupt and was able to establish himself enough to provide for his
family.
At the age of 34, Susannah and her family moved from Wiltshire England to
Nova Scotia, Canada where her husband worked at the Intercontinental Railway Project for the
Nova Scotia Railway. At age 37, her family reunited and relocated to Dartmouth where she
brewed her signature beer “Brown October Ale” for her family, friends and local sailors and
soldiers (Moosehead, 2019). The ale was so good that a family friend, Captain Francis De
Winton, suggested that the couple start a brewery. With investments from some of their friends
