Introduction

In the current global market place, effective supply management has become a significant
competitive advantage for business organizations. Findings from recent research studies indicate
that business firms which utilize extensive supply chain planning and management have a high
tendency of delivering increased efficiencies. Supply chain management entails the planning,
scheduling and controlling of the flow of a company’s goods to enable the firm to remain
competitive and also manage to control its costs. Even though supply chains have been there
since businesses established the importance of bringing their goods and services to the
consumers, the concept of supply chain management is relatively a new branch of management.
The main objective of this report is to understand this comparatively new branch of management
known as supply chain management in the world of business along with its advantages and
impact. It also aims at detailing in depth the two types of supply chain management that is
manufacturing supply chain management and service supply management.

Definition

Supply chain management is the exclusive and efficient management of supply chain
activities with the sole purpose of maximizing customer value as well as gaining a sustainable
competitive advantage. It depicts the conscious efforts made by supply chain firms as they ran
their supply chains in the most effective ways possible. Supply chain activities entail a wide
variety ranging from sourcing, production, logistics, development and product development as

well as the information systems that are required these activities (Davis, 2003). Therefore, supply
chain management includes all the transportation and storage of raw materials, work-in-progress
inventories and finished products from the point they were sourced to the point they are used by
the end customer.

The other definition of SCM is the designing, planning, executing, controlling and
monitoring of supply chain activities with the sole purpose of improving a company’s net value,
creating a competitive infrastructure, leveraging international logistics, measuring global
performance as well as synchronizing supply with demand.
