Introduction
Muscle cars form a significant part of the history and culture of the American society the
period post World War II in the 1950s and 1960s. The muscle cars represent the American
culture that the people associated with and found significant to their lives at the time, and
gradually morphed to become a reflection of the American society. There is no single definition
of a muscle car but the criteria that justified the classification of one as a muscle car in America
include: the car must have a powerful V8 engine, it must have only two doors which give it a
sleek look and sporty feel, and it must have the rear wheel drive (McKinney, 6). The muscle cars
have a cultural significance in America because the car features represent ideals that resonate
with the American people. This paper, therefore, uses the history of Chevy muscle cars to
address the significant impact of the muscle cars on the American culture, and how the cars have
culturally and physically transformed America.
The History of Muscle Cars
The muscle cars emerged in America in 1949 when the demand for faster cars in America
began to increase. The people’s demand for faster cars revolutionized the automobile industry
this demand influence manufacturing decisions that saw Oldsmobile débuting the first muscle
car, Rocket 88. The production of Rocket 88 influenced the American perception and definition
of muscle cars onwards which included fast, powerful, cars with powerful engines (Benz).
