OBJECTIVES:
The main objective of the experiment is to determine wavelengths of sound waves having
different frequencies in air through a method of resonance in closed pipes as well as to estimate
the speed of sound in air.
PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES:
The speed of sound can be theoretically determined using the formula;

In laboratory experiment the above properties of sound are used to determine the speed of the
sound i.e. sound of known frequency and measured wavelength in the experiment. When
undertaking the experiment, the principle of resonance will be adopted in computation of the
wavelength. Resonance is the propensity of a system to oscillate at its maximum amplitude.

The tuning of the fork on top of the glass tube, a strong sound of the vibrating fork will be heard
when the air column in the tune is at desired length. Wavelength can be determined having
known the height of the air column when production of sound is at maximum. Therefore, using
equation 1, the speed of sound can be computed. From the equation it can be established that the
higher frequencies, the lesser the height of the air column since the speed of sound is constant.
