where t is the variable . In our case time is the variable and so we say

n(t)=3.93 x 1.03t  where t=65

Im still confused on how they got the answer 65 on the question express the population in 1855 using functional notation.

65 is the value of t. its not the population. They subtracted the years 1855-1790

=65


The 65 now becomes the value of t where the expression can be written

N = 3.93 x 1.03^65

N= 26.8418321
