For us to find the distance we can use the principles of trigonometry to get the length:

We have opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse sides: the adjacent is the base of a triangle and is 85M while opposite side is the height and is 66m

The hypotenuse is given by: The square root of base square + adjacent squared

This gives:

85^2 + 66^2= 11581

The square root becomes

= 107.615055  m

Calculate the time when using the shortcut:

Speed is 7 miles/hr

Distance is 107.615055 metres

Convert to Kilometers/Hour

1 mile =1.60934 Km

7 miles gives

1.60934 x 7 = 11.26538 Km/hr

we have distance we need to know time:

T=D/s

T=107.615055m/11.26538

Convert the meters to km

=0.1076/11.26538

0.00955139 Hours

Multiply by 3600 to get it in seconds

0.00955139  x 3600

t= 34.385004 s

The longer route would cost how much time?

The total distance is  66+85=151m

t=D/s

t= 151m/11.26538

151m = 0.151km

t=0.151/11.26538

t= 0.0134039 hr

Convert to seconds

t=0.0134039  x 3600

=48.25404 s

So he would have saved

saved time= 48.25404-34.385004

= 13.869036  seconds
