it take 2 lbs of applies to make 5 pies, so how many pounds of apples do you need to make 20 pies.  Please explain how to get answer so I can help my 6th grader.  He has the following examples:

no of pies          5           20

lbs of applies    2

The answer is 8 but how do I get there?

in this question, you will have to apply direct proportion and ask youself:

If 2lb can make 5 pies, how much lb would be needed to make 20 of the same pies?

the answer would definately be more than 5 pies as before. 

Therefore when you have established this truth, use direct proportion and do the math:

whenever the expected number of a quantity is larger than the present quantity, we use the larger number of the other party as the numerator of the equation...so this will be:

2/5*20= 8

there is your answer...you will need 8lb to make 20 pies.
