Themes of racism and friendship in the film, Green Book
Green Book is a comedy-drama movie produced in 2018. The movie is directed by Peter
Farrelly and set in 1962. The film is based on a true story and is about an Italian nightclub
bouncer in Copacabana nightclub in New York City, Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga who serves as
a driver for a celebrated African-American concert pianist, Don Shirley through the Midwest and
the Deep South (Ide). Whereas Tony is a lower class white New Yorker, Don is a rich and very
educated African American pianist.
One of the major themes of the film Green Book is race relations. The movie, through the
protagonists Tony and Don, explores the issue of race relations in the Deep South in 1962. The
movie depicts race relations in the American South both the positive and negative sense. On the
negative side, the movie shows the racial discrimination and severe treatment of AfricanAmericans by whites in the Deep South. In the early scenes of the movie, mistreatment of
African-Americans because of their race is depicted when Tony observes two African Americans
fixing something in his house while his wife serves them lemonade. Because they are black,
Tony throws away their glasses. However, racial tolerance is revealed when Don hires Tony as
his driver based on merit even though he is white and badly mannered. Additionally, throughout

the movie, Don experiences racial discrimination from his hosts and from the public while not
performing. For instance, a bunch of white men threatens Dr. Shirley’s life while at a bar.
