You work for a fencing company. A customer called this morning, wanting to fence in his 1,320 square-foot garden. He ordered 148 feet of fencing, but you forgot to ask him for the width and length of the garden. Because he wants a nicer grade of fence along the narrow street-facing side of his plot. so you need to figure out the length and width from the information the customer has already given you. What are the dimensions?

Fencing length is the perimeter and perimeter is

2L + 2W = 148

Area is

L * W = 1320

So

L  + W = 74 ...................1

L * W = 1320 .......................2

From 1, we get

L = 74 - W

Put it in 2, we get

(74 - W)W = 1320

74W - W^2 = 1320

W^2 - 74W + 1320 = 0

W^2 - 30W - 44W + 1320 = 0

W(W - 30) - 44(W - 30) = 0

(W - 44)(W - 30) = 0

W = 44   W = 30

Now if width is 44 feet, length is

L = 74 - 44

L = 30 feet

If width is 30 feet, length is

L = 74 - 30

L = 44 feet

The dimension could be one of these

Length = 30 feet              Or            Length = 44 feet

Width = 44 feet                                Width = 30 feet

Hence.
