Description

Using the article by Beauvais, Steward, DeNisco, and Beauvais (2014), prepare a written analysis that addresses the following:

  • Determine the general strengths and weaknesses of correlational designs. Based on your findings, identify the strengths and weaknesses of this particular study.
  • Explain when a correlational design is most useful in an educational setting, and summarize whether this is an appropriate use of a correlational design in this study. Explain why, and if it is not, recommend a more accurate research design.
  • Identify and explain the types of problems correlational designs could best address. Determine if this study’s problem is best addressed by a correlational design.
  • Review the research question being asked in this study, and then provide a sample research question corresponding to a different hypothetical correlational design.

Support your assignment with at least this scholarly resource. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards

Research is the systematic investigation into an area with the aim of establishing new
facts and ideas and arriving at new conclusions. Further, research can be termed as the process
through which a person asks and attempts to provide answers to matters regarding certain aspects
in a field. The idea of research is to expound on the already existing information and furthering it
to produce a better understanding (Walker, 2005).
Research entails the critical structure of questions which are answered in a wellorganized manner to produce a meaningful conclusion. Research can comprise of various
methods of collecting information including questionnaires, interviews, and experiments all of
which attempt to address a particular subject by providing the appropriate answers. The methods
of research keep on advancing to keep pace with the continually transforming world. This aims
at ensuring that the results obtained from the research are relevant to the current context.
Although many research methods exist, this article aims at analyzing the correlational design.
The quantitative approach applies the deductive logic where a hypothesis is created and
then complemented with the collection of data to find out whether there is tangible evidence of
the existence of that hypothesis. The process of determining the existence of this hypothesis
involves the use of measures and a description of numbers. The quantitative inquiry applies
scientific techniques of analyzing problems and examining specific hypothesis entailing the
relationship surrounding it.
The technique records variables using the numerical data that allows statistical
procedures to be utilized for the mathematical analysis. Beauvais, Stewart, DeNisco, and
Beauvais conducted the study to ascertain if any “connection existed between emotional
intelligence, psychological empowerment, resilience, spiritual well-being, and academic success
in undergraduate and graduate nursing students." Therefore, this article will examine to find out

whether it was a suitable design for the research carried out by Beauvais et al. (Beauvais et al.,
2014).
Correlational Research
Correlations refer to the existence of a relationship between two or more variables. In
other words, correlation can be referred to as the statistical measure of how closely related two
variables are to each other. In another definition, correlation is the statistical technique that
attempts to determine the degree to which variable changes following the change of another.
Correlational design establishes the connection between two variables without providing an
effective solution or conclusion. Also, it entails the formulation of a hypothesis that can be
applied in an experimental study (Walker, 2005).
Correlational study is mostly used in psychological research as a method of data
collection where experiments are not applicable. Through a correlational study, researchers can
be able to establish a connection between the variables. However, they cannot control the
variables since the process does not involve and an experiment. Although Correlational studies
can be able to prove that the variables are related to each other, they cannot show that the change
undergone by one variable was caused by the other variable (Mertens, 2015).
When conducting a correlational study, research can often obtain three types of outcomes
which include a negative relation, positive relation or no relation at all. Consequently, a positive
outcome may suggest the existence of a relationship between the two variables. On the other
hand, a negative connection may indicate that the two variables have an inverse relationship
while no relation implies that the two variables are unrelated.

The correlational design is applicable where research can be conducted between variables
without any intention of manipulation. Also, correlation is applied to ascertain the possible
relationship between the variables. Also, in correlational design, Multiple variables can be
analyzed in a single study. The research carried by Beauvais et al. is aimed at determining
whether the relation between four variables and the succe...
