Why is it needed? Describe a situation you observed or heard about where a leader negotiated on a group or organization’s behalf. Was the leader effective in the negotiation? Student Replies Jessica Boundary spanning is basically a person who interacts with internal and external sources with the goal of linking an organization’s innovations system. Boundary spanning helps an organization gain innovative information from other businesses. This helps the organization grow by gaining Intel from external sources. Skills and abilities needed for affective boundary-spanning include being knowledgeable and knowing the organization’s limits and expectations. Another skill is knowing the organization’s boundaries. I can improve my improve my skills and abilities for this type of leader by practicing new collaborative skills. I will also enforce my credibility being that it is the most important characteristic. I feel like boundary spanning is needed is the motored vehicle organization. I order to keep up with new technology one must look into other external sources to see what is new features and products that can be used to produce effective and advanced vehicles. When I was a Partners in education liaison for the Army, I had to negotiate on behalf of my company. Our goal was to build a stronger relationship with the outside schools grade 9-12. I created a singing cadence and performed it using drill and ceremony. I also served lunch to all grades. By doing, Teens ranging from 14-18 years averagely learned that the Army promotes going to school and getting degrees. It also shows that we serve our community in more ways than one. I had to negotiate with the Principal and let her know I come to serve on behalf of the Army in support of our future vision. That type of leadership will also build credibility of the Army. She was thrilled and discussed our community service in her quote in the newspaper stating how much our presence made a difference. I was very effective in this situation. I could have done way more community service that day but I believe my mission was accomplished. Christian When I think of effective boundary-spanning I often envision that of a geopolitical strategy. As it probably does not pertain to that sort of thing I would like to think it deals with teamwork by an organization in hopes of establishing some sort of connections within organizations as well outside. Therefore, effective boundary spanning would most likely deal with inside employees along with executives/managers from other outside tier organizations. All in all, boundary spanning is important since it deals with increasing your network from many different organizations. Some skills required to ensure this strategy works is to establish a healthy relationship from outside sources. Also, make a connection with those that might be apart of your mission, but do not directly work for you. For instance, there might be a piece of equipment that your company owns, however it requires annual maintenance from other sources. Your outside logistical agency might be a company or member that you just don't get along with but, in order for all things to get fixed, you must find a way to ensure that piece of equipment is repaired thus working with people you don't like. I think a leaders boundary-expanding within an organization would be definitely needed in times of organizations that they are unfamiliar with. For instance, let use an example of a different aircraft maintenance unit that is temporarily TDY to a forward location. The forward base is hosting and does a formal meet and greet and lays down the law of their expectations along with ensuring they have everything they need. Of course, all these things have been worked out from months of planning however, the commander must connect to their outside AMU only to ensure he/she can meet their demands when requested as their mission is directly related to the Secretary of Defence National Defence Strategy. Lastly, I have dealt with a leader that has had to deal and negotiated with outside organizations. During 2011 when the unit I was assigned with was gearing up to transform an active duty unit to be involved with a Total Force Integration things went haywire. There was lots of commotion of why does their leadership need this sort of manning versus what we cannot support. Also, why must we give them more steal (aka) aircraft when they have more than enough. All in all, the leaders I worked with along with the reserve(s) worked with members they were unfamiliar with and they grouped together to formulate a great plan. In the end, we had several E-9s and O-6s that listened to the lower echelon which in turn ensured both parties worked together to meet an agreement. As we slowly transitioned into a family, that unit was the best I have ever worked for in my entire AF career. Shortly we were inspected by the IG both active/reserve and were awarded the General Curtis Lemay Trophy for the Best Bomber Operations Wing in the AF.
