Obesity, defined as a condition in which a person has elevated levels of body fat,
constitutes a global epidemic with ever-increasing prevalence rates. It is estimated that the
prevalence of obesity will reach and exceed 18% and 21% for men and women respectively by
2025 (Kyrou et al., 2018). For Asian Americans, the epidemic is equally alarming. Obesity is
considered a cause as well as an exacerbating factor for various chronic illnesses including high
blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. In addition to
the elevated risks of these diseases, obesity also attracts social and economic costs.

Risk factors of obesity
Obesity causes high blood pressure in various ways. First, the more a person weighs, the
more blood is needed to be supplied. The circulatory system can only expand for so much, and
for obese people, blood travels over a larger area. This forces the heart to increase pressure so
that the blood can reach all the cells in the body hence high blood pressure. Secondly, obesity
results in a lot of fat deposits along blood vessels. These deposits reduce the diameter of these
vessels thereby forcing blood to pass at elevated pressure. Thus, obese people are at an increased
risk of developing high blood pressure.
Obesity is also a cause and an exacerbating factor for cardiovascular disease. These are
