California State University, East Bay Department of Kinesiology Kin 423 – Exercise and Stress Exercise Evaluation Assignment (10 points) Exercise is most often considered to have a positive effect on overall stress due to the enormous amount of physical, emotional, social, psychological, and health benefits resulting from it. However, this is not always the case. Occasionally, exercise can serve as a burden when it challenges an individual’s schedule (time) or is too physically strenuous (acute or chronic overtraining). Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to provide the students an opportunity to critically evaluate their exercise habits in relation to the effect they have on health and stress. IF you do not exercise, you must find an individual to interview for this project. How: This assignment has 2 parts. 1. Describe your exercise habits. Simply state how often, how long, and what type of exercise you do on a weekly basis. a. Do they fall within the guidelines for physical activity? (https://www.livestrong.com/article/379522-acsm-exercise-weight-lossguideline/). Are you below, within (+/- 20%) or above them? b. If you: i. are below the guidelines from #a above • provide and explain a list of your barriers (provide at least 3) to exercise (may refer to Exercise 11.1 Harrington, p 334) ii. exceed the guidelines in #a above • describe if you believe you are at risk from exercising too much (too much physical stress, i.e. overtraining) or if exercise is affecting other aspects of wellness (psychological, social, academic, professional) or life in a negative way. iii. are within the guidelines • describe whether or not this is a sustainable level of exercise for you and what specific measures (provide at least 2) you need to take in order to maintain it. 2. Provide: a. 3 specific affects (positive or negative) that your CURRENT exercise habits have on your overall health. Be specific and thorough about the aspects of health they affect (i.e. cardiovascular health). b. 2 ways that you could improve your current exercise habits. Be specific regarding how this will be done. Don’t simply state ‘I will exercise more…’ but instead describe how you will accomplish this goal. For example, you may start going to sleep earlier so that you can wake-up early and exercise before school or you may describe how adding something like Yoga to your exercise routine will be of benefit to you. Be sure to mention the type of exercise you will be doing. c. Finally, explain how the changes in exercise you proposed will have a positive impact on your stress and overall health.
