Chris and his brother leave the same point and run in opposite directions on a straight road. After running for three hours, they are 18 miles apart. If Chris runs an average of one mile per hour faster than his brother, what is Chris's average speed?

Let chris's average speed be "x"
so, speed of this brother = (x-1) , since Chris is 1 mile per hour faster

so, total speed = x+x-1 = 2x-1

and speed at which 18 miles in 3 hours were covered = 18/3 = 6 m/hr

so, 2x - 1 = 6
2x = 7
x = 3.5

so, Chris's average speed is 3.5 miles per hour
