Traveling at full speed on a river, it takes 2 hours for a motor boat to travel 8 miles downstream and 4 miles back upstream. if the current's speed is 2 mph, what is the maximum speed of the boat in still water?
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
Going upstream the boat goes 8 miles in two hours or 4mph. Going downstream the boat goes 4 miles in 2 hours or 2mph. So knowing this I would say in still water the boat should have a maximum speed of 3mph. I do not think the current's speed affects the problem.
Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
