Traveling at full speed on a river, it takes 2 hours for a motor boat to travel 8 miles downstream and 4 miles back upstream. if the current's speed is 2 mph, what is the maximum speed of the boat in still water?

speed of boat --- x km/h 
speed of current -- y km/h  =2mph

time= diatance/speed


8/(x+2)+4/x-2=2

8(x-2)+4(x+2)=2(x-2) (x+2)

8x-16+4x+8=2(x^2-4)

6x-4=x^2-4

x^2-6x=0

x(x-6)=0

x=0 or x=6


maximum speed of boat in still water =6 mph
