Third-party logistics (3PLs)
These are companies that are engaged in outsourcing procured goods for distribution and
transportation for client companies. These integrated functions can be tweaked based on
customer needs or the market demand conditions for the products or materials with the primary
purpose of saving time and cost and for the client to shift focus to the core business (Sohail,
2011). These companies provide multiple or single types of services related to logistics. Big
corporations will outsource their requirements to the third party logistics companies. The
services offered by these companies include packing, contract warehousing, distribution services,
and inventory and freight management including transportation management (Diabat &
Gunasekaran, 2013). These multiple needs such as distribution and warehousing are fulfilled for
the end users. In general terms, the third party logistics has a broad meaning that applies to any
service contract that involves shipping or storing items. The 3PL can be a single provider such as
warehouse storage or transportation or it can be a system-wide combination of services capable
of handling an efficient supply chain management (Govindan & Kannan, 2012). The 3PL are
essential for a medium-sized company since they can receive services that are cost-effective and
