A order is received to administer 500 ml of saline to run in over 5 hours. Using a micro drip administration set that delivers 60 drops per one milliliter, at how many drops per minute will you set to your administration to drop?

First calculate mL/hr by dividing the total volume by the number of hours to be infused.

500ml / 5 hours = 100ml/hr 

Next is to calculate the drip rate per minute.

(100ml/hr  x 60 (drip factor)) / 60 minutes = 100gtts/ min

Therefore you would set your administration to drip around 100 drops a minute.
