Advances in technology have revolutionized every aspect of the contemporary, with the
incorporation of information technology in day-to-day activities an overlying feature in this
trend. In the course of their application, these technologies collect user data and relay it to
service providers, a case that has always generated different opinions. However, tremendous
growth in technology over the last years has led to increased concerns over the privacy of the
data collected and ways in which enterprises use it, these especially focusing on uses that do not
necessarily benefit the user. The United States and the European jurisdictions have thus drafted
policies for data protection, but the guidelines in Europe are seemingly better compared to those
established in the U.S. due to their overall capacity to protect the privacy of all users.
The United States does not have a single principal data protection legislation, but
European countries have an elaborate data protection law in the form of the General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Park et al., 2018). Protection of data of the United States
residents is primarily regulated as per industry through laws enacted at both national and state
