Two Philosophers’: Ralph Waldo Emerson vs. Karl Marx
Ralph Waldo Emerson vs. Karl Marx
I chose both of these philosopher’s because they both believed in nonconformity. Emerson was
a free thinker. He believed in self-reliance and rejected modern philosophies about religion and
government. Marx also believed about living in the moment with his ideas, meaning he rejected
preconceived notions about religion, government and society. He believed that societies developed
thru class struggle and that would ultimately be the downfall of capitalism. My interpretation of Marx is
that he really didn’t like the ruling class or even the class structure in his modern world.
What’s interesting to me is that both of these men, although far apart in terms of miles lived
during the same time period, Emerson from 1803-1882 and Marx from 1818-1883. Both of these men
had the same frame of thinking or at least the same idea in terms of ways to live your life. Let your ideas
and experiences form your views on the way you should live and the way government should be.
